New age of minimally invasive surgery-3D Simulation and Surgery Navigation Make the Surgeries More Precisely.

 Seeing through the skin to draw a full map of the human body. The surgeons not only can hammer out the best way of surgeries but also have an auxiliary device to guide the direction to make every cut more precisely.

     The forensic expert picks up a skull, and the computer simulates the skull covered with muscle tissue and skin layer by layer and adds the eyeballs. In no time, the navigation system successfully restored the face.

     This scene not only appears in the mystery series but also happens in the operation room in real life. But the sequence is upside down. Doctors help the patient “see through” the distribution of bones and cartilage tissue, reducing in the computer to find out the best way of the operation.

     The way of the surgeries is progressing year by year. For patients, 3D imaging, computer simulation, and surgery navigation bonding with Maxillofacial, oropharynx, tooth implantation, spine and joint surgeries can make the accuracy of the surgery increase substantially. Particularly for the complicated surgery. For example, the patients who have oral cancer often have difficulty to operate because the tumor invades the area of intensive nerve and blood vessels. Or have a defect in appearance or function after the surgery. Having a rehearsal before the surgery can have more opportunity to maintain the quality of life after the surgery.

New technology rebuild the appearance of the bone

     “Now have a technology to rebuild the appearance of the bone.” explained by Cheng-Hsien Wu, an attending physician from Taipei Veterans General Hospital Stomatology Department Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. “To get the images of the bones and soft tissue in various ways and then scan the contour, entered into the computer software. The 3D model has been integrated perfectly.”

     He said that a patient had a tumor inside the maxilla, and the edge of the cancer cell was very close to the cranial base. Traditionally, it is a highly challenging surgery. If the scalpel outstrips a little bit, it will cut into the brain. But if the tumor doesn’t cut cleanly for safety, it has an opportunity to relapse.

     He made a 3D model of patient’s head to locate the edge of the tumor. With the navigation system to know the location of the surgical instruments during the surgery, the tumor was removed successfully. After the radiation therapy, there is no sign of the relapse.

     To gain those images are rely on CT and MRI. CT can see through the structure of the cortical bone; MRI films the structure of the soft tissue like brain, muscle, and tendon. The 3D facial scan is equipment which has multiple optical cameras, putting the thousands of pictures together to the stereoscopic contour of a head and facial features.
